Hello Everyone

Welcome to the Winter Newsletter. It is a “proper” Winter we are having, plenty of rain and cold days. We are battling the mud at Otahuna despite two loads of shingle and new spouting on the woolshed roof. We will be wiser to the mud next year!

Many people say to me, “I’ll wait until the weather is warmer to ride” but you know there is nothing better and more envigorating than wrapping up and heading out to view the Southern Alps from the Port Hills or the Waiau river basin from the top of Snowdon all toastie and dry on your trusty barefoot horses.

Livery

We now offer full livery for those of you who have your own horse, or wish to purchase one, and haven’t the lifestyle to be out tending to your horse each day.

At both Mt Lyford and Otahuna Horse Riding we have spaces for 6 more livery horses. We offer daily checks, hay, natural hoof care, worming, exercising if you wish, cover care, and annual dentistry all for $80.00 per week. Daily hard feeding $20.00 extra. You pay for vet bills.

Your horse is kept with the main herd in a free range environment with creeks, native forest, grassy open areas and hillside.

You have the opportunity to join our treks and activities, taking advantage of our support and instruction, knowledge and equipment and using our trails where we are able to offer unguided riding. Both our operations are off road, sheltered and have access to rides right from the base. There is room to park a horse float and store gear in a locked container.

We can help you find the right horse for you as well.

Call us on 3290160 if you or someone you know of is interested in this offer.

Come Riding Presentations

Some of you have approached me to run a presentation at schools, at home with firiends and other interested riding buddies, which is really great. I had a fabulous afternoon at Glentunnel with Annette John’s hostessing and some dozen others. It was a great way to spend a wet afternoon and talk about our deepest passion, horses!

What:
A Come Riding Presentation is a presentation that I give with a stunning slide show that teaches the audience about the horse human interaction using natural horsemanship and how it effects us as people in many aspects of our lives. I talk from one to one half hours about the definition of NH, how it effects horses and people, what we do in our business to enhance this connection between people and horses, the effects on some of our riders and what we offer to those interested in riding with us. The purpose of the session is both for interest about this subject and promotion of our horse riding business, Kate Tapley Horse Treks Ltd. The presentation is free, no one is obliged to buy rides, but if people want to buy rides on the night they are $10.00 cheaper and the host or hostess gets 10% of what we sell on the night. This makes the presentation an easy fund raiser for groups looking to enhance funds.

Who:
Any interest group or club you are associated with, sports clubs, rotary, lions, womens groups, work places, schools etc. Riders can have their own evening with their friends and family, especially the ones they want to come riding with them! I have successfully presented this session to rotary and lions, pony clubs, public sessions at the Arts Center, businesses and groups of friends.

When:
Now is a very good time!

How:
Call Kate on 3290160 or email kate@katetapley.co.nz I require a DVD player and TV in a warm room that is all. I come free!

So see what you can all do to make a Come Riding Presentation happen, and I look forward to sharing with you the magic of horses.

Riding to do

I have two places left on a 3 day rustic adventure ride to Hanmer Springs on the 5,6,7th January just waiting for someone (could be you)to jump on it. Cost $895.00pp for everything.

The Over the Top Ride at Otahuna is running all year round. This is remote and spectacular right on your back door!! (if you live in Christchurch that is.) And with the snow on the Alps it is views, birdsong and horse’s rythm all the way. Please someone book this so I can guide it and do it again soon!    $320.00pp Min two riders

Becoming a Confident Horsey Parent
Now is a good time to be looking at a parent’s course to be ready for the Spring and Summer. Babs takes these groups and with two horse crazy girls of her own she knows all the stories. These courses are simple, short, and enable parents to equip themselves to be involved in their children’s dream to be a horse rider! There is a special emphasis on safe handling. Take a look at the flyer on the Otahuna website. Cost $145.00pp

Office Data Entry Person – Position available

Thank you to all who approached me about this position, I am training up two people to take this on and many thanks to all who were interested. I am hoping they will both be overwhelmed with processing and make this the best season yet!!

Handy to know horse riding hint

I have been noticing the usefullness of using your belly button to ride your horse with. Raise it and shine it like a torch light (or a light saber if you want to be a Jedi knight)into the direction you want to go. Doing this takes care of putting ourselves into a good riding position. It brings our shoulders up which helps our horse to do the same. It brings our heels down which enables our hips to be more fluid with the horse’s movement, making it harder for us to come out of the saddle. We like that one!!! And it softens our feel as our eyes are looking ahead and not down, so our body does the seeing by feeling with the horse. Much better feel means much better communication. I can just hear all the horses breath a sigh of relief and recognition as I say this to you all. “More comfort and easier for me to respond and move under you” they all say to me.

Try it yourself. On all fours lean over your front legs (arms) and move about. Note the tension in your neck and shoulder. Lean onto your hind legs, knees and feel the softness in your neck and see how easy it is to move. Cool huh.
